Dieffenbachia

Dieffenbachia is a large and diverse genus of tropical and subtropical plants in the family Araceae. Dieffenbachia has become popular because they are a low-maintenance indoor plant. Native to the rainforests of Central and South America, this lush tropical plant can make a great addition to your home or office. Dieffenbachias often have large green leaves with variegation or stripes, and they can grow to be 4 - 6 ft. tall. The name Dieffenbachia comes from Rudolph Dieffenbach, who was a German physician and botanist in the 1800s. He first discovered this plant while doing an expedition in Ecuador.

These plants prefer bright but indirect light, so avoid placing them in front of a window or near a fireplace.  Dieffenbachia prefers temperatures above 60 degrees.

Watering frequency varies by the size of your pot; most plants need to be watered once or twice a week, while larger pots need to be watered up to three times per week. The soil should always be moist but never wet.

They can go up to a month without water if the soil has a large enough reservoir to store water and the pot is in a cool place. In general, dracaenas should be watered about once every two weeks in order to keep their soil moist at all times.

Fertilize with half-strength fertilizer every two weeks for best results.

Dieffenbachia is toxic so keep them out of reach of pets and children.
