Winner of the Royal Horticultural Society Award of Garden Merit for outstanding quality, stability, and all-around merit, the Peacock Plant (Calathea Moakoyana) is a show-stopper that is easy to care for under the right conditions. Round leaves with red undersides and dark-green markings resemble the feathers of the bird it was named for. We love watching new leaves unfurl like a burgundy fruit-roll up. Don’t run for the watering can if the leaves drift downward! This calathea is a much loved member of the ‘Prayer Plants’, or plants that moving leaves up and down during the course of the day as though in prayer.

Care Tips for the Peacock Plant

Fertilizer: 20-10-20 or 20-20-20 applied every other watering. Higher fertilizer levels may attract pests.

Light: Light levels should remain between 650-750 foot candles. If light levels are too high leaves can become scorched.

Soil: Choose a coir or peat-based media with good drainage for quick root development. Ideal pH is between 5.5 to 6.5.

Water: The soil should stay evenly moist throughout the life of the plant. If the plants become too dry, then the leaves will exhibit leaf and tip burn.

Humidity: Ideal humidity levels are between 70-80%.

Temperature: Plant grows best between 70°-80° F range. During the cooler months when the temperatures falls below 65°F the plants will grow more slowly, and fertilization rates need to be reduced.

Disease & Pests: Some common issues for these plants include fungus gnats, spider mites, and botrytis. Good watering and sanitation practices will help avoid these problems.

I ordered this plant on a whim and received it yesterday! Shipping was quick, and the plant was so well packed! It came to me safely and in perfect condition. The plant itself is so healthy, and even the 4″ size I bought has so many beautiful leaves!
