Calathea ‘Jungle Velvet’

(1 customer review)

-

Calathea Warscewiczii ‘Jungle Velvet’ is aptly named for its soft leaves that you just want to pet! Although commonly called a calathea, it is actually classified as Goeppertia warszewiczii and is part of the Marantaceae (Prayer Plant) family. Prayer plants are known for leaves that move up and down in response to changes in light and temperature. Jungle Velvet is native to the tropical undergrowth of Central and South America. It requires a medium-level of care to keep soil moist (but not soggy!). Keep humidity above 50% for full, lush leaves.

Care Tips for Calathea ‘Jungle Velvet’

Fertilizer: 20-10-20 or 20-20-20 applied every other watering. Higher fertilizer levels may attract pests.

Light: Medium to bright indirect light for active growth. Will maintain its size in low light. Direct sun can scorch the leaves.

Soil: Choose a coir or peat-based media with good drainage. Ideal pH is between 5.5 to 6.5.

Water: The soil should stay evenly moist throughout the life of the plant. If the plants become too dry, then the leaves will exhibit leaf and tip burn.

Humidity: Ideal humidity levels are between 70-80%. Keep above 50% at a minimum. Low humidity is the most common cause of problems with this plant.

Temperature: Plant grows best between 70-80° F range. During the cooler months when the temperatures falls below 65°F the plants will grow more slowly, and fertilization rates need to be reduced.

Disease & Pests: Some common issues for these plants include fungus gnats, spider mites, and botrytis. Good watering and sanitation practices will help avoid these problems.

When this arrived, I wanted a house full of them! The soft look and rich color, absolutely beautiful! They do like higher humidity, so be prepared for that.
