Ficus Umbellata Tree

-

A close relation to the Fiddle Leaf Fig, the Ficus umbellata tree or Giant Heart Leaf Ficus, presents similar heart-shaped leaves and a characteristic sweeping architecture that adds style to any room. These highly popular houseplants in Japan are making moves on the U.S., in part because care is much easier than with the finicky Fiddle Leaf.

Care Tips for Ficus Umbellata Tree

Soil: Choose a peat or coir-based media with a pH range of 5.5 to 6.5 and good drainage for quick root development.

Light: Bright light, approximately 3000-3500 foot candles. Avoid direct afternoon sun. Plants can take higher light levels as they mature.

Water: The soil should be allowed to dry slightly between watering. On a scale of 1-5 moisture levels should remain as close to a 3 as possible.

Temperature: Grows best in temperatures from 70°-85° F range. During the cooler months when the temperatures fall below 65° the plants will grow more slowly, and fertilization rates need to be reduced.

Fertilizer: 20-10-20 or 20-20-20 applied twice a week at 150 ppm- 175 ppm. Higher fertilizer levels may attract pests.

Disease & Pests: Aphids are a common pest on new growth. Overwatering can lead to fungus gnats and edema issues.
